RRB NTPC Recruitment – Complete Information Guide

Overview of RRB NTPC Recruitment

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) invite online applications from eligible Indian nationals for various posts under the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC). These posts are available in different Zonal Railways and Production Units of Indian Railways. The recruitment process is conducted through a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) and involves multiple stages of examination and verification.

Posts Under RRB NTPC

The NTPC category includes the following posts:

Undergraduate Level Posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper, Train Clerk and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk

Graduate Level Posts: Traffic Assistant, Goods Guard, Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Senior Time Keeper, Commercial Apprentice, and Station Master.

Educational Qualification & Age Limit

Educational Qualification:

Candidates must have:

  • 12th Pass (10+2) OR
  • Graduation Degree OR
  • Equivalent qualification from a recognized board or university

Age Limit:

  • Minimum Age: 18 Years
  • Maximum Age: 30 Years
    (Age relaxation applicable as per government rules.)

Stages of RRB NTPC Examination

The recruitment process consists of the following stages:

  1. First Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT-1)
  2. Second Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT-2)
  3. Skill Test (Typing Skill Test or Computer-Based Aptitude Test)
  4. Document Verification
  5. Medical Examination

Selection is strictly based on merit.

First Stage CBT (CBT-1)

Exam Pattern:

  • Duration: 90 Minutes
  • Total Questions: 100
    • General Awareness – 40
    • Mathematics – 30
    • General Intelligence & Reasoning – 30

Subjects Covered:

Mathematics:

Number System, Decimals, Fractions, Ratio, Percentage, Mensuration, Time & Work, Time & Distance, Profit & Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics etc.

General Intelligence & Reasoning:

Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Syllogism, Puzzle, Venn Diagrams, Decision Making, Analytical Reasoning, Statement-Conclusion, Data Sufficiency etc.

General Awareness:

Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity, Economics, General Science, Indian Railways, Important Government Programs, Environmental Issues, Computers, etc.

Minimum Qualifying Marks:

  • UR: 40%
  • EWS: 40%
  • OBC (NCL): 30%
  • SC: 30%
  • ST: 25%

(2% relaxation for PwBD candidates in case of shortage.)

Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)

CBT-2 is conducted separately for different pay levels.

Exam Pattern:

  • Duration: 90 Minutes
  • Total Questions: 120
    • General Awareness – 50
    • Mathematics – 35
    • General Intelligence & Reasoning – 35

Candidates are shortlisted based on the normalized marks of CBT-1.

Up to 20 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for CBT-2.

Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

Applicable only for:

  • Station Master
  • Traffic Assistant

Important Points:

  • Minimum T-Score required: 42 in each test battery
  • No relaxation for any category
  • No negative marking
  • 70% weightage: CBT-2
  • 30% weightage: CBAT

Only candidates 8 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for CBAT.

Typing Skill Test (TST)

Applicable for Typist-related posts:

  • Senior Clerk cum Typist
  • Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist
  • Junior Clerk cum Typist
  • Accounts Clerk cum Typist
  • Senior Time Keeper
  • Junior Time Keeper

Typing Speed Requirement:

  • 30 Words Per Minute (English)
    OR
  • 25 Words Per Minute (Hindi)

Typing must be done on a computer without:

  • Editing tools
  • Spell check

Important:

  • TST is qualifying in nature
  • Marks are NOT added in the final merit
  • Only CBT-2 marks decide merit

PwBD candidates may be exempted as per the rules.

Document Verification (DV)

Candidates equal to the number of vacancies are called for Document Verification based on merit. Additionally, 50% extra candidates may also be called (as a reserve list).

Medical Examination

After document verification, candidates must pass the prescribed medical standards set by Indian Railways.

Final Selection Process

The final merit list is prepared based on:

  • CBT-2 performance
  • CBAT (if applicable)
  • TST qualification (if applicable)
  • Document verification
  • Medical fitness
